Name: Adrian Humphries Rank: 1st Dan Position at School: Instructor Martial Arts History - I practiced Kyokushin Karate during the 1990’s with Shihan Alwyn Heath at the Llantrisant Dojo and Sensei Reg Boswell at the Garw Valley Dojo. During my time studying Kyokushin, I achieved Black Belt and fought at National and International level in both semi contact points sparring and full contact knockdown sparring. I lost my way at some point and did not train for a few years until my daughter Isabel asked if she could join the local Tang Soo Do class at Garw Valley. I took her along with the intention of going to the gym upstairs while she was training, but on watching the class and witnessing the enthusiasm of Masters Wayne and Sian Humphries my interest in the Martial Arts was reignited. The initial transition between styles was difficult and I still have nightmares of Master Sian shouting “Foot Mr Humphries”. Recent Tournament History BTSDF Championship 2008 Gold Medal Forms, Gold Medal Sparring TTF Championship 2009 Gold Medal Forms, Gold Medal Breaking, Silver Medal Sparring BTSDF Championship 2009 Gold Medal Forms, Gold Medal Sparring TTF Championship 2010 Gold Medal Forms, Gold Medal Breaking, Silver Medal Weapons, Bronze Medal Sparring. Favourite Technique: In sparring a sneaky middle area roundhouse kick Favourite Form: Currently Jin Do, although I enjoy performing both of the Bassai Forms. Most Influential Martial Artist: In Tang Soo Do I have massive admiration for Master T J Trudgill for his awesome technical ability, inspirational leadership and enthusiasm for Tang Soo Do and our Federation. Masters Wayne and Sian Humphries their skill, experience and knowledge, their teaching ability and the enthusiasm they bring to each class. In Kyokushin again another inspirational martial artist, great Karate exponent and teacher Shihan Alwyn Heath who trained me and very many others to Black Belt, whose goals in his karate teaching are to make strong Karateka and decent people. Osu! Other Hobbies: Relaxing in front of the TV, between work, Tang Soo Do and walking the dog, there’s not much time left for anything else. Favourite Book: Can’t say I have a favourite. Last Book Read: I packed two for my recent holiday and finished both within the first few days. The Soul Of A Butterfly by Muhammad Ali, and Secrets For A Powerful Life by Grandmaster Dominick Giacobbe. Favourite Movie: Too many to chose, love all of the “Star Wars” movies, “Enter The Dragon” must feature somewhere and pretty much anything involving Quentin Tarantino.
